In the heart of Bidibidi Refugee Settlement, innovation is meeting necessity as communities embrace palm fronds as an alternative roofing material. Traditionally, many shelters relied on grass for thatching—a practice that has become increasingly unsustainable due to overharvesting, scarcity, and environmental pressures.
With support from EveryShelter, a US-based organization committed to providing dignified housing solutions for displaced populations, HAS equipped youths with skills of harvesting and preparing palm fronds for roofing. As captured in the photo above, teams equipped with protective gear are carefully cutting and arranging the fronds. These palm leaves, naturally strong and durable, not only provide effective shelter but also reduce the demand on dwindling grass resources.
