Safeguarding Futures: How Child Protection in Uganda is Transforming Lives
Introduction:
Every child deserves the right to grow up in a safe and nurturing environment. However, for thousands of children in Uganda—especially those in refugee settlements—safety is not guaranteed. The challenges of displacement, poverty, and trauma leave these children vulnerable to exploitation, abuse, and neglect. At Humanitarian Action for Sustainability (HAS), we are committed to protecting these children and giving them the opportunity to reclaim their futures.
In this blog, we’ll explore the importance of child protection, the work we’re doing in Uganda’s refugee camps, and how you can help us make a lasting impact.
The Reality for Vulnerable Children in Uganda
Uganda is home to one of the largest refugee populations in the world, with more than 1.5 million refugees, many of whom are children. These children, often fleeing from war and violence, arrive in refugee camps like Bidibidi—one of the largest in the world—carrying the scars of their experiences.
Once there, they face new challenges: overcrowded living conditions, limited access to education, and the risk of abuse or exploitation. Without the right support, these children can fall through the cracks, losing out on opportunities for education, healing, and emotional well-being.
The Statistics Speak Volumes:
- 1 in 4 children in Uganda experience violence or exploitation.
- Thousands of children in refugee settlements lack access to basic protection services.
- Many face psychological trauma from witnessing or experiencing violence.
How HAS is Making a Difference
At HAS, we take a holistic approach to child protection. This means we address both the immediate needs of vulnerable children—ensuring their safety, well-being, and mental health—and work towards creating sustainable systems that will protect future generations.
Our Child Protection program in Bidibidi Refugee Settlement and other disaster-affected areas focuses on several key activities:
- Case Management: We provide comprehensive support to children in need. From identifying at-risk children to offering referrals and follow-ups, we ensure they get the help they need. Whether it’s legal aid, healthcare, or educational support, our case management teams make sure no child is left behind.
- Community-Led Protection: We work closely with local leaders, parents, and volunteers to strengthen child protection structures within the community. By training community members in child protection protocols, we ensure that support continues even after we phase out.
- Psychosocial Support: Trauma runs deep among children who have experienced conflict, displacement, or abuse. We provide much-needed counseling and emotional support, helping children recover and regain a sense of normalcy. This includes providing support to survivors of gender-based violence and other forms of trauma.
- Positive Parenting Advocacy: Children need not only protection but also guidance and love from their families. We run parenting sessions that teach caregivers positive parenting techniques, encouraging non-violent forms of discipline and creating nurturing home environments.
Real Stories of Change
Mariam’s Journey:
Mariam, a 12-year-old girl from South Sudan, arrived at Bidibidi Refugee Settlement after fleeing conflict in her home country. Separated from her parents during the journey, she was left vulnerable and without support. HAS’s Child Protection team identified Mariam and immediately took action, providing her with counseling, a safe environment, and connecting her with extended family members.
With the help of our caseworkers, Mariam has now re-enrolled in school and is excelling in her studies. She says, “I feel safe now, and I want to be a teacher when I grow up, so I can help other children like me.”
Mariam’s story is just one of many examples of how targeted intervention can completely change a child’s future.
Why Child Protection Matters for Long-Term Development
Investing in child protection is not just about immediate safety—it’s about securing a brighter future for entire communities. When children are safe, educated, and emotionally supported, they are more likely to grow into productive, self-reliant adults who contribute positively to society. This is particularly important in fragile settings like refugee camps, where instability can undermine the future of generations to come.
By protecting children today, we are laying the foundation for peace, stability, and development in the years to come. These children are the future leaders, teachers, and community builders, and it’s our responsibility to ensure they have every opportunity to reach their full potential.
